“Why This First Mission to Geraldton Could Be a Turning Point for Families in the Diocese”
Praise God for the successful and grace-filled initial mission of Couples for Christ Western Australia to the Diocese of Geraldton.
On Saturday, May 16, the mission team, headed by Bro. Joy and Sis. In-In Intervencion, departed Perth at 6:30am and travelled approximately 420 kilometres north to Geraldton, arriving at around 11:00am.
Geraldton, a coastal city in Western Australia’s Mid West region, is known for its strong Catholic presence, multicultural community, and welcoming parish environment—making it a meaningful place for evangelisation and family ministry.
At 2:00pm, we were blessed to meet and fellowship at the bishop’s residence with Most Rev. Bishop Michael Henry Morrissey, together with Fr. Tai Trinh, Fr. Larry Rodillas, and Fr. Robert.
During the meeting, an overview of Couples for Christ (CFC) was presented, highlighting its mission as a Catholic family renewal movement dedicated to evangelisation, formation, leadership development, and building Christ-centred communities.
We also shared about the Answering the Call of the Poor (ANCOP) program and the various ministries that serve couples, singles, youth, children, and families.
Bishop Morrissey was encouraged to learn that CFC is open to all nationalities and cultures, and acknowledged the positive contribution of CFC members in parish life, particularly in Perth.
He expressed appreciation for the community’s strong emphasis on family life, formation, and mutual support.
A significant part of the discussion focused on the challenges facing marriage and family life today, including the decline in church weddings and a growing lack of understanding of the Sacrament of Matrimony.
In response, the mission team shared how CFC continues to guide couples toward Christian family life through formation programs, marriage enrichment activities, and initiatives such as mass weddings held in the past.
The structure of CFC community life—through prayer meetings, household gatherings, assemblies, and ongoing formation conducted both in person and online—was also shared.
The bishop appreciated how these help sustain spiritual growth and commitment, especially in remote areas across Australia.
He further affirmed the importance of involving the whole family in evangelisation, recognising CFC’s holistic approach to nurturing children, youth, and parents alike.
The mission was deeply blessed by the bishop’s expressed support for CFC in the Geraldton Diocese, as well as the immediate appointment of Fr. Larry Rodillas as Chaplain of Couples for Christ in the diocese—bringing encouragement and spiritual guidance as the mission continues to grow.
That evening, the team met and fellowshipped with parishioners, Filipino families, and members of the local community, including the President of the Mabuhay Association. It was a joyful gathering marked by shared stories, meaningful conversations, and a renewed sense of connection within the faith community.
The following morning, the team attended Sunday Mass officiated by Bishop Morrissey.
During the Mass, the bishop warmly introduced Couples for Christ to the congregation and gave the team the opportunity to briefly invite parishioners to learn more about the community.
After Mass, flyers were distributed and personal conversations followed, encouraging participation in upcoming CFC activities.
We thank the Lord for the warm welcome, fruitful discussions, and the opportunity to begin building strong partnerships in faith and mission.
